for you from the country to the inner city ♪ >>> chuck brown passed way yesterday after a short bout with pneumonia at age 75. he was the founder of go-go, a sound that came to define the district. >> this morning the city that loved him so much is showed their love for him. dancing out in the streets in north washington last night and tracee wilkins is live outside that theater this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. chuck brown created this music in the '70s and has been playing it all of this time. i can tell you i have never seen the actual end of a chuck brown concert because i get tired have and go home. he would keep playing with all of this energy and enthusiasm like he was still 20 30r years old. in his 70s would play for hours and hours. i mean nonstop. no intermission. no breaks. this was music about the people of d.c. and the people of d.c. were in it and helped to create it. it's fitting that would want to come here and pay tribute to him. let me show you what it looked like last night. as you said, thousands of people dancing in the streets. his da
tribute to chuck brown. the d.c. music legend died yesterday. he was 75 years ode. chuck brown was born in north carolina but he made his name on the d.c. music scene in the '70s. literally made his name over because he went to jail as one thing and said never going back to jail. i'm going to be chuck brown and never went back to jail as that name. in 2009 part of 7th street near t street northwest was renamed chuck brown way. he played live concerts up until last year. he was even honored by the national symphony orchestra last september. >> when anybody you meet talks about chuck brown they instantly smile. you'll notice that. a crowd gathered outside the howard theater last night for an impromptu vigil last night to honor chuck brown and it wasn't a sad event. it was a celebration of his music and a lot of people were dancing. chuck brown called his music go- go because it just kept going. he created the continuous beat to stock the dance floors at the clubs from clearing out. >> delia goncalves is live at the studios in maryland with more on the legacy. good morning. >> reporter: g
's legendary godfather of go-go music. chuck brown. this is the beginning of a long good-bye for chuck. fans are snaking their way past his open casket down at the howard theater. for many, this is not a sad occasion. this is rather a time to celebrate the legacy of an artist who brought the city together for a long time. bruce johnson is live at the howard theater with more on the event still going on tonight. bruce. >> hey derek. we are outside the howard theater. a thinner crowd than we've seen for much of the day. these are people getting off work, dropping by. people were able to find parking places. they are at a premium. in the mid afternoon, most part it has been a festive-like atmosphere out here. this view is supposed to go on until 10:00 tonight. it will go on longer. it is public. it is open to everybody. no cameras inside. i'll give you a glimpse of what it's been like around here. is this a viewing unlike anything you've ever seen in this town. >> within the hour, the street in front of the howard theater has become a carnival and chuck brown, father of go-go, would have want
are mourning the loss of chuck brown. he passed away yesterday at the age of 75 after a short bout with pneumonia. charl charles music career. the north carolina native got his start in the '60s playing his guitar for a d.c.-based latin band. by the early '70s charles got into his own. the godfather go-go is what the world came to call brown. it became synonymous with d.c. >> they heard funk before, it's just another form of funchy music with a lot of percussion and sound. >> let me hear you say oh it's got that latin and that african feel to it. >> just one more time. >> in and out of trouble with the law in his youth, brown taught himself to play guitar in prison. he and his go-go beat became world known landing his first billboard numb were one heat with "bustin' loose." he was nominated in 2010 at the age of 74. >> if i hit that stage, i right in a rage and forget about my age. >> chuck brown never turned his back on his home. he stayed a staple of d.c. events that became important with his community. he spent his time with students around the district never forgetting how a yo
for next week's public farewell to the godfather of go go chuck brown. a public viewing for the d.c. music legend will take place tuesday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. all day at the howard theater on t street northwest. then the community can attend a memorial on thursday from noon to 3:00 at the washington convention center. bruce leshan has more on the final farewell to this washington legend. >> reporter: chuck brown used to play here at the howard theater on t street when it was a run down old dump back in the 1980s. he was actually scheduled here for a homecoming concert in june. instead a full circle moment, his viewing here on tuesday. >> yes, i'll be there without a doubt. >> reporter: how do you feel about chuck brown? >> i love him. i love him to death. i through up on chuck brown. -- i grew up on chuck brown. >> reporter: one of the really cool things about chuck brown was his ability to bring people together from all over the place, whites, african americans, asians. he played the go go clubs and he played the kennedy center. his funeral will be here in perhaps the most establishment
service lasted for just over three hours. it ended with chuck brown's signature song. >> that's the thin that i liked about it. he didn't spell it out, you know, to try to take it to the world. they had to come and get it, you know, it stayed here. you know his kids were a part of the on-stage performance. they will continue to perform two of them here, outstanding football players with the big careers ahead of them. you saw the send off, probably won't be another one like them. chuck, thank you, thank you. and not a single tear in there. and they would have wanted it that way. they wanted them dancing and singing. that's what they got. >> and it started out with wind them up, chuck. they just kept going and going and we could feel the electricity here. and it must have been absolutely over the top for you being on the inside. >> oh, i don't know if you have been in the room with the great hall for the washington convention center. but they were rocking it at one point. the floor was rocking it up. and people jumped up and down and you could feel the floor rocking. i mean some people, th
candidate brown to verbally attack then-mayor fenty. tonight, many still want ton if mayor gray had knowledge of this. vincent gray's campaign for mayor was a long time ago but questions about what went on behind the scenes won't go away. mayor gray refused to talk about two of his campaign workers charged this week. >> this is an ongoing pending investigation and there is nothing, really, i can comment on and this is obviously continuing to unfold. >> reporter: according to authorities, brown was not lying when he said members of gray's campaign paid him to stay in the race. brown has always said that the mayor knew about it. the mayor always denied it. >> i think i will stay with what i said before and there is that continuing investigation. it has been for months. >> reporter: wednesday, gray's campaign worker howard brooks was charged with making a false statement to the fbi when he said he never gave money to brown's campaign. we went to brooks' silver spring home seeking comments but no one answered the door. before he was charged this morning, council hab mary chay, who led a

investigation. vestigation. >>> chuck brown's family is holing a public viewing at the howard theater today. >> throughout the day, thousands of fans are expected to come out in honor of the godfather of go-go. melanie alnwick is live at howard theater with details on the tribute this morning. >> reporter: good morning. based on the number of media who are already here this morning, it looks like it will be a pretty well attended event. you said thousands of people are expected. we've heard some estimates as many as 20,000 or 30,000 people. it will be quite the scene here this afternoon. the family has made plans for a very quiet, respectful event. the 75-year-old godfather of go- go died may 17th from complications from pneumonia after a lengthy hospital stay. since then, fans have come to this area not far from where brown grew up to leave tokens of respect and appreciation. brown was scheduled to play a sold-out show at the newly renovated howard on april 1st. he fell ill just days before that. today, the formal farewell begins first with this public viewing. fans will able to quietly wa

things rolling on this may 29. good morning, washington. i am steve chenevey. >> i am pamela brown. we begin with traffic and weather. lisa baden standing by but we start with meteorologist adam caskey. temperatures will keep climbing. >> we are starting the day in the '70s, on our way to nearly 90 this afternoon with humidity. you will feel that first thing today when. you step when it will get run out in the thundershowers later on today. expect downpours and localized heavy rain. not everybody will see the downpours, but we will have chareas of heavy showers. it is 73 degrees right now in arlington, 72 in suitland and leesburg, 69 in hamilton, virginia 71 in waldorf, 69 in culpeper. widespread showers and thunderstorms later on today with localized downpours. some of the first few storms could started around lunchtime west of interstate 81. how does it look so far in the commute? >> we will talk to lisa in a moment. in northern italy there was a 5.8 magnitude quake that shook the region. italian media reports at least eight people died. some survivors are still buried in the rubble.
name vincent gray or former mayoral candidate suleiman brown but the documents do allege that donations were transferred from candidate a to candidate b and that gore destroyed a record of those illegal payments. the charges do seem to support those allegations that suleiman brown made after he was fired from his job as an accountant in the gray ad m he says he was paid to bash former mayor adrian fenty during campaign debates and for a city council that has grown weary of scandals, some members are ready for the feds to finally wrap up the year-long investigation, whatever the outcome. >> i'm just really hopeful that the u.s. attorney is getting to the end of these investigations. certainly the people of the district of columbia deserve to know what happened and if there are laws bleaken, people have to be held accountable. >> the obstruction of justice for the alleged destruction of a notebook that contained campaign payment records just after suleiman brown went to the media, that is most serious charge. it could carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. mayor gray and suleiman b
jay von brown was missing. he went missing at 11:00 a.m. sunday. so take a look. it's been a long search for a lot of them. he lives in this apartment complex with his mother, between 13th and 14th. police are staged in the parking lot. that is the last spot where he was seen. he was playing right outside in that parking lot sunday morning. take a close look at the picture of six-year-old jay von brown. when he was last seen, he had on a green t-shirt with a white t-shirt underneath, blue jeans, red and black shoes. his grandmother, tina brown, is pleading for her grandson's safe return. >> i came up here at 9:00. to find him and i have been looking since. i just want him to come home. if anybody have him, if anybody see him, just bring him home. >> reporter: you can imagine what this family is going through. i'm told by other members of the family that jay von lives with his mother and his mother has sole custody of her son. his father is in jail, so there is no other family member who could have taken off with him. they were hoping if you take a close look at the picture, you wi
brown. they played his music and dance. and chuck brown 75-years-old, and had started gogo music. he played it for nearly four decades and really inspired an entire new genre of music. many bands pay him like a sea and say he was the reason why they started to play. we talked to his guitars and one of the local radio host who played his music. >> he said [inaudible] he hung with it. it did exactly what is said he would do. >> i knew he had been very sick, but still never prepared for that call. >> ofmany people here in the area call him a self-proclaimed choc aholic. no public memorial by the city has been announced, but city officials say this is something they're looking into. obviously something that his fans say they wan. >>t. >> police say mary kennedy, the estranged wife of robert kennedy jr. was found dead yesterday in the families, in new york. she was 52-years-old. sources tell abc news that she hung herself. they had four children. >> closing arguments get underway today in the john edwards conspiracy trial. he faces up to 30 years in prison if he is found guilt

the possibility of parole. he will be going to prison for the rest of his life. for the murder of trooper brown, who was killed in june of 2010. now there are a couple of other details that came out here as they were doing the sentencing. first of all, it came out that the reason that this man was thrown out of an appleby's in june of 2010 was because he had apparently urinated on another one of the customer there is and was being disruptive. well he was thrown out. today, we heard from trooper brown's -- partner, who said that when he came out of the bar, trooper brown decided that this man did not need to be arrested, but should be let go and given a second chance. and this is something that the prosecutor spoke about. that even after given a second chance, that the man came back and then shot and killed the trooper. and yes, now he will be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. prince george's state's attorney angela brooks spoke about the sentencing today and we also heard from his partner, carl peoples. this is the trooper who held trooper brown as he died. >> the trooper bro
parole for killing wesley brown. brown was shot and killed outside a foresthill restaurant in june of 2010. another man, at the milton, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in jail for being an accessory to the murder. former federal aviation administration chief randy babbitt is scheduled to go on trial today on drunk driving charges of. he was arrested and charged in early december after police stopped him from going the wrong way in fairfax city. he resigned from his job shortly after his arrest. >> fuel services today for the church secretary who was fatally shot a week ago at a church in ellicott city. a homeless man who had received help at st. peter's episcopal church sean brenda brewington and the church pastor mary- marguerite kohn. any kill themself. the funeral is at 1:30 this afternoon at st. john's and ellicott city. >> president obama making history. >> the announced his support for same-sex marriage in an abc news exclusive. he has become the first sitting president to ever do so. >> in an exclusive interview with abc news, president obama made history, be
large crowd that we have assembled here. not too surprising. fans of course flocked to chuck brown's concerts it see him perform live and now they're flocking to the d.c. convention center to celebrate his life. ♪ ♪ ♪ wintd me up, chicauck. >> reporter: this woman grabbed her spot at the head of the line at 8:00 last night. >> i wanted to make sure i get in and my family came. and chuck is like that. he bring everybody together. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: chuck proun could always pack the house. and his memorial service is no different. thousands of people are expected to attend. the crowd so big that the service is being held in the d.c. convention center. >> i just wanted to be here to feel the atmosphere. to feel the love that chuck brown has gathered throughout the city. >> wonderful. his legacy, his encouragement, his peace, his love, his happiness, everything. his music, phenomenal. wonderful, wonderful energy. >> reporter: brown's rose-covered casket sat the front of the stage. behind it drums, keyboards and microphones. that's because this service will be as much about the
